What Are Macronutrients?

Every food you eat is made up of some combination of three fundamental nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These are called macronutrients — "macro" simply because your body needs them in relatively large amounts, compared to vitamins and minerals. Each macronutrient provides energy measured in calories, but calories are really the least interesting thing about them. What matters more is how each one functions once it's inside your body.

Protein: The Body's Builder

Protein is composed of smaller units called amino acids, and it serves as the raw material for virtually every structural process in the body. There are 20 amino acids in total; nine are considered essential, meaning the body cannot make them and must get them from food. Animal-based proteins (meat, eggs, dairy) typically contain all nine essential amino acids. A type of carbohydrate that resists digestion in the small intestine and passes into the large intestine, where it supports gut bacteria and bowel regularity. Fiber also plays a role in blood sugar and cholesterol regulation.

Carbohydrates: The Body's Preferred Fuel

Carbohydrates break down into glucose, which is the brain's primary energy source and the fuel most cells prefer for quick, efficient work. When you eat carbohydrates, your pancreas releases insulin to help move that glucose into cells for immediate use or store it as glycogen in the liver and muscles for later.

Not all carbohydrates behave the same way. Simple carbohydrates — sugars found in candy, soda, and refined grains — digest quickly, causing a rapid rise in blood glucose. Complex carbohydrates — found in whole grains, legumes, and vegetables — digest more slowly due to their fiber content, providing more sustained energy and supporting digestive health.

Fiber, technically a carbohydrate, passes through the digestive system largely undigested. It feeds beneficial gut bacteria, helps regulate cholesterol, and plays a role in blood sugar management. Eliminating carbohydrates entirely removes fiber along with them, which can have unintended consequences for gut and metabolic health.

Fat provides 9 calories per gram — more than protein or carbohydrates (each providing 4 calories per gram) — which is why it was historically targeted in low-calorie diets. But calorie density alone doesn't determine whether a food is healthful.

Very low fat intake can disrupt hormone production and vitamin absorption. Extremely low protein intake accelerates muscle loss, particularly as people age.

The body is adaptable — it can switch fuel sources and compensate short-term. But prolonged elimination of any macronutrient forces trade-offs that compound over time. Many people who feel better on a restrictive diet are actually benefiting from other changes they made simultaneously: eating more whole foods, cutting ultra-processed items, or simply paying more attention to what they eat.
